Writing at Coffeehouses

Due to weather and illness, I was only able to get a couple of days of writing in this week. Still, I’m happy with what I wrote, and I’m still on target.

Panera is really becoming my place to write. This is amazing considering that I got so little done at coffeehouses in my youth. Of course, back then most of my “writing” was juvenile crap about how I was so sad because of the unfair world, and how I was looking to find a sad girl so that we could share our sadness. How was this genius unrecognized?

I will admit it, I wrote at coffeehouses in the hope that the writer mystique would help me score. It worked, but not with the girls that I should have been after. Long gone are those days of wearing flannels over They Might Be Giants t-shirts, smoking Camels, and writing about the deep, dark places of my 19-year-old soul into a battered spiral notebook.

Panera is different. It’s quieter, the refills are free, the wi-fi is free, and it is filled with other freelancers and adult students. I find myself much more productive when I’m there. If I’m home, phone calls and chores distract me. When I’m at Panera I can just listen to my iPod and write. It is my little writing haven while Caitlin is at school.
