The Hugos

The Hugo nominations are out. They seem fine, but I’m a little surprised by how bad fantasy got shut out. It’s a bit of a crock that The Name of The Wind wasn’t nominated for Best Novel.

Doctor Who grabbed nods for "Blink" and "Human Nature/Family of Blood." It’s nice to see that "Human Nature" is now worthy of a nomination since it apparently wasn’t when it was an exquisite novel. The big shock to me in this category is that Torchwood grabbed a nomination for "Captain Jack Harkness." It’s not a bad episode, but I would have given the nod to "Small Worlds" or "Out of Time" over it. It’s also kind of hilarious that a Torchwood episode is considered more Hugo worthy than anything the US produced except for one BSG episode and a fan film. Granted, Heroes ended up getting the nod in long form for its entire first season.

I’m pleased that [livejournal.com profile] matociquala got nominated for Best Short Story, and that David Anthony Durham was nominated for the Campbell.

My biggest congratulations are for [livejournal.com profile] shsilver who is nominated for Best Fan Writer. His fanzine Argentus is also nominated for Best Fanzine. As some of you may recall, I had an article about Doctor Who continuity in that issue. It would seem that Argentus received the coveted Michael D. Thomas bump. :)
