Secrets Are Hard
Mar. 15th, 2008 09:10 amIt’s very hard to be in the know. It’s not like I carry major secrets. I can’t tell you who the next Doctor is going to be on Doctor Who, or how to make a car run on water, or why people watch Matthew McConaughey movies. My secrets would be of interest to about a few hundred people.
rarelylynne landed another noteworthy author for the NIU archives yesterday. I can’t even hint about this person’s identity, but it’s pretty damn exciting. Lynne’s policy is to not announce any promises until she has materials in hand at the University. This is obviously the right policy as anything can happen. The official awesome four are Jack McDevitt, E.E. Knight, Sarah Monette, and Donald Bingle. There are now about 19 others that have agreed to donate their archives with NIU. Some of these are authors that are well known and respected.
Why is this such a hard secret to keep? I believe in my wife’s mission. SF is the most important genre of the last 60 years, and academia just doesn’t take it seriously enough. That means that nobody is asking the midlist authors for their papers. The end result is that this stuff will end up destroyed, which is a crime. For the future to fully appreciate the craft and genius, it’s important to save that juvenilia, trunk novels, early drafts, notes, and correspondences. That’s my wife’s mission, and she’s now starting to have some real success.
Did I mention how proud I am of my wife?
