I submitted a short story
Feb. 10th, 2009 03:54 pmI submitted a short story.
A few days ago, I was chatting with
seanmmurphy about writing short fiction. For me, it’s always been a struggle. I wrote a couple of okay short stories back in college, but that was a million years ago. Recently, I just haven’t been comfortable with the medium. Sean thought I should give it another try. He had a pretty good reason.
The problem with novel writing is that it takes so bloody long. I spent 9 months writing and 6 months revising my first novel. Now it’s with readers. Once I get it back, then I get to do another rewrite. Next, I get to query agents. If I’m lucky, I will land an agent who will probably suggest some more rewrites. Once my agent sees those rewrites, then he or she will hopefully sell the damn thing to an editor. Then the editor will ask for even more rewrites. It’s very likely that if I am successful, it will take many years to get from my first idea to publication.
I had the idea for this little short story in bed on Sunday. I wrote it yesterday, revised it this morning, and submitted it a few minutes ago.
I have no idea when I will collect my first rejection letter, but it will probably be in a matter of weeks or months. That’s a big difference. And hey, who knows, maybe I will even get published. Sean is a wise man.
