David Eddings Passed Away
Jun. 3rd, 2009 08:42 amFantasy author David Eddings passed away yesterday. He was best known for writing the best-selling series The Belgariad and The Mallorean.
Eddings made me a fantasy fan. I started high school as a mystery reader. My roommate Neil introduced me to Tolkien, King, and Eddings. At the time, Eddings had the biggest impact. The Belgariad was just so much damn fun. The sweeping action perfectly melded with his memorable characters. Eddings's dialog sparkled with wit and exuberance. It had a classic Hollywood rhythm to it. We all wanted to talk like Silk and Belgarath.
I devoured his books. I still remember all of us fixating on the eventual release of The Seeress of Kell. We spent hours in our dorm rooms hypothesizing about how Eddings was going to wrap up all of the story elements of the series. Eddings fostered my first literary community.
In retrospect, I can see all of the flaws. Those aren't important today. Eddings brought me joy and friendship at a time in my life that I really needed it. I wish I could have thanked him in person.
He will be missed.
