Writer Envy

jimhines just posted an excellent piece about having writer envy. It's very honest and revealing. Many friends and acquaintances are busy comparing their careers in the comments.
It's strange reading for me since my brain lumps all of these professional writers into one category: successful. My desperation to be published means that I only understand the problems of professional writers in the abstract. I'm at the stage where I would cut off my left pinky if I thought it could get my novel sold to an SF publisher for a few thousand dollars (this is why writer scams work).
Do the insecurities ever go away? It would seem that the answer is no.
