Live Journal/Blogging
How has blogging, particularly as part of community-based blog sites like LiveJournal, affected SF fandom? With many current SF authors and other content producers (such as actors, writers, producers, and directors of media SF) blogging about their work, their lives, and their process, has the separation between fan and content producer broken down, or is this just another version of fanzines and convention-going? We will also discuss favorite blogs for keeping up with SF-related news.
E.E. Knight, Deirdre Murphy, Lynne M. Thomas (M)
Saturday, 11:30 AM
Revisiting Our Childhood Favorites—Good or Bad Idea
Sometimes you re-read a childhood favorite, and experience the wonder all over again. Sometimes, not so much. Our panelists guide you through the minefield that is the SF of your youth.
Valli Hoski, Kerri-Ellen Kelly, Jeffrey Liss, Patricia Sayre McCoy (M), Michael D. Thomas
Saturday, 2:30 PM
Bad Wolf/Doctor Who
After 45 years of existence, the longest running science fiction show in the history of television is more popular than ever. This panel will look back on the recently completed Series 4 and departing showrunner Russell T Davies’s era as a whole. We will also discuss the upcoming specials, Series 5, Steven Moffat as the new showrunner, and the casting of Matt Smith as the eleventh Doctor.
Samuel Travis Clemmons, Mike Cole, Allan Rosenwarne, Scott Smith, Michael D. Thomas (M)
Sunday, 10 AM
Have Blogs Replaced Paper Fanzines?
For over 70 years, paper fanzines played an important role in SF fandom as a way for fans and authors to critique, analyze, and argue. In the last decade, the speed, low cost, and reach of the Internet seems to have made the paper fanzine almost obsolete. This panel will look at what has changed and whether or not paper fanzines still have a role to play in the future of fandom.
Christian McGuire (M), Steven H Silver, Michael D. Thomas
Sunday, 12 PM
Torchwood
A rollicking (PG-13) discussion of the “adult” spin-off of Doctor Who. Is Torchwood only popular because it’s dirty? Is it good television? Is it good science fiction? What will happen in the upcoming specials? All these questions and more will be discussed.
Samuel Travis Clemmons, Dina Krause, Scott Smith, Lynne M. Thomas (M)
