Thanks to everybody for all of those anniversary congratulations. :)
It's been a quiet few days.
rarelylynne and I had a leisurely anniversary. We ate mediocre tapas, popped into small stores, and enjoyed having an afternoon to ourselves.
The rest of the weekend has involved errands and keeping our little girl from being too barfy. She has a nasty cold that caused some problems Friday night. Since then, everything has stayed down.
Like much of the geekiverse, we watched Dollhouse on Friday night.
Meh.
If that was the second pilot, I'm scared to see the first version. There are many things to like about the show. I appreciate its darkness, how it doesn't shy away from the moral implications of its subject matter, the sets, and the fact that they're trying something different.
The negatives, however, are huge. The first twenty minutes choked on the inelegant info dumps, there is no humor or chemistry between the regulars (usually the Whedon specialty), and I can't imagine ever developing any empathy for the characters. These are all nasty or blank people doing ambiguous things for the rich.
The biggest liability is the star. Look, I loved Eliza Dushku as Faith. The problem is that Cate Blanchett would have difficulty with a role that involved becoming a new character every week. Dushku doesn't have those kind of acting chops. Her hostage negotiator with PTSD made me cringe.
I'll stay with the show for a couple more weeks, but I'm not that hopeful that they can turn this around before cancellation. I give it 4 more episodes.
