With that news, I can now reveal what Lynne and I were up to on Wednesday. Cat Valente was in Chicago for a book event, so we ended up having lunch with her. It was a hectic morning. After dropping Caitlin off with my aunt in the burbs, we ran to Hyde Park to meet Cat.
I’m not too familiar with the neighborhood, so I chose a Cajun/Southern restaurant called the Dixie Kitchen based on the recommendation of President Obama during his segment on our PBS dining show Check, Please!. He is a wise man. The food rocked. I had a delicious pulled-pork sandwich with mashed sweet potatoes. Cat and I also split some scrumptious fried green tomatoes.
We had a great time with Cat. She donated her archives, and we spent the rest of a leisurely lunch swapping stories about our misspent youths and our mutual friends. It was a very relaxing meal.
After lunch, we dropped Cat back at the place she was staying and spent the rest of the day wandering around the University of Chicago campus. It was Lynne’s first time there. We popped into the Smart Art Museum for a few minutes, and then headed over to the rare book room at the library. Lynne talked shop with some colleagues while I looked at some of their treasures.
We then went to The Oriental Institute. They have a tremendous collection of Near East antiquities. Lynne almost passed out after seeing so many cuneiform tablets in one place.
Because we are foolish, we then drove on the Dan Ryan and Kennedy during rush hour to get to Cat’s event on the North Side. We made it in time to slurp some noodles at a local Japanese restaurant.
The Palimpsest Event was fantastic, a wonderful mixture of readings from Palimpsest and live music by
s00j based on the novel. The venue was packed with a large portion of Chicago’s queer pagan community. The performance ended with a standing ovation.
After some quick hugs, we returned to my aunt’s house and spent the night. I’m still exhausted. :)
