michaeldthomasI'm not a big fan of life-threatening illnesses and death. As a human being, this is not exactly a shocking revelation. I'm especially sick of cancer.
Cancer killed my father and Lynne's mother. A couple of months ago, the husband of a fandom friend/CDTL contributor passed away from cancer. A week and a half ago, our acquaintance/NIU Author Kage Baker passed away from cancer. This week, the husband of Caitlin's school Speech Therapist passed away from cancer (we're going to the visitation tonight). Everywhere we look somebody we know or a loved one of somebody we know is battling cancer. Off the top of my head there's my grandfather, one of Lynne's co-workers, another NIU Author, and the daughter of a good friend. Cancer can fuck off.
I guess this is part of getting older. You start to know more people with terminal illnesses.
And yet, those deaths aren't the worst for me. Another of the girls with Aicardi syndrome passed away on Monday. She was 11. There are only a couple thousand Aicardi girls in the entire world. When one passes, it hits us all hard. I love my daughter so much. It's very hard to accept that her life expectancy is only another 10 years or so.
ETA- I didn't even mention my high school friend who passed a few weeks ago. I could use some less death in my life.
