Jun. 4th, 2008 02:36 pmI’m wiped. Two days in the special child grinder has sapped most of my energy. Everything went well, but it meant having to be at my best for 48 hours.
Yesterday was the trip to Children’s Memorial Hospital in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. The hospital is over sixty miles away, and our first appointment was at 10 am. Since this meant driving into the morning rush hour, we had to leave early.
rarelylynne took the day off to help, so that certainly made it a much more enjoyable ride.
Traffic wasn’t too bad, and the hospital stuff went smoothly. First, they changed her button and did a contrast study to make sure we weren’t pumping food into Caitlin’s abdomen. That went fine. Next came the meeting with Pediatric Epileptologist and Nutritionist. Amazingly, Caitlin has been seizure free since January, so there wasn’t much to talk about. Her doctor is very proud of all of her progress. We absolutely adore him. It is so rare to find a specialist with such a wonderful bedside manner. He really cares about Caitlin.
We ended the trip with a round of blood work. This used to be a nightmare. When Caitlin was little, they had a lot of trouble finding her veins. She screamed so much during blood draws that Lynne still can’t bear to be in the room when they happen. Caitlin was fine this time. She was even smiling.
Today was our big IEP meeting with the school district. This is the meeting where the teachers, therapists, and staff all meet with us to create a contract of Caitlin’s services, goals, and equipment for her next school year. This was a big one since Caitlin is transitioning to kindergarten. We brought our own team to the meeting that included her home physical therapist, home speech therapist, and her Youth Educational Advocate. The Youth Educational Advocate is a person trained to make sure that all of the federal and state laws are followed.
The meeting went for 2 ½ hours. This was a peaceful one. Luckily, everybody was on the same page. Caitlin will have am kindergarten, all of the same therapies, and will even spend some time in a regular kindergarten classroom.
Tonight is book club with lots of Earthsea shenanigans.
Just finished reading: The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula Le Guin
Currently reading: Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link
