A couple of quick things before I get some work done.

That sad fiasco that was JumpCon continues to get worse. The convention “organizer” just filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. Combine this with the theft and unfair business practices charges already against him, and it’s pretty safe to assume that none of the fans are getting their money back. An interesting note to this is that we now have an itemized list of the money he owes different media guests. These prices reflect appearances at multiple JumpCons, but it can still give you an idea about how expensive it is to book a media guest. Keep this in mind the next time you criticize your local SF Con for not being more like Comic Con or Dragon*Con.

There also seems to be a kerfuffle in the Doctor Who small press world. Obverse Press (they’re publishing an Iris Wildthyme anthology) had a major falling out with The Doctor Who Forum. I didn’t follow this as it occurred, I’ve only read the publisher’s side of the story, and the other side contains many of my friends who have decided to not comment about the accusations. That being the case, I’m not going to give any opinion on the matter itself.

One thing I would like to say, however, is that this kerfuffle demonstrates the need for an understanding of how to use different social media services for self-promotion. If you are using somebody else’s social media service to promote your product, you have better be damn sure that you understand the policies, procedures, and terms of service.

Finally, if you want to be accepted as a professional, then act like a professional. Common sense stuff, but it’s still a problem in the SF world.
